The tie that binds ‘is an idiom that typically evokes a warm feeling of connection. But if you think of it not idiomatically but literally, that’s not so cheery. Think trapped, stuck, and hemmed in.
We’re prisoners of our own making when we can’t let go of things and thoughts. What possesses you? Is it too many material things? Too many obligations and command performances? Too many open loops that make your mind feel like a squeaky hamster wheel in perpetual motion.
Find the scissors and make the snip. The metaphorical scissors might be a trash bag or a trip to the donation truck. Or saying, “I’m flattered you would ask, but I am not able to accept.” Maybe it’s finding your mental “oil can” by compartmentalizing or being more mindful. There are lots of ways to let go.
